The UK government has confirmed (June 2026) that the Peppol network will be the core interoperability framework for its mandatory Business-to-Business (B2B) e-invoicing rollout.

From 1 April 2029, all VAT-registered businesses will be required to issue and receive VAT invoices electronically, marking a significant milestone in the UK's digital tax transformation. The move is designed to improve interoperability, reduce manual processing and encourage greater automation across finance functions.

The requirement will follow a phased rollout, beginning with large businesses and later extending to small and medium-sized enterprises. The initiative also aligns with HMRC’s Transformation Roadmap, which sets out the objective of a digital-first tax system by 2030. The model closely resembles Belgium’s first phase e-invoicing regime introduced from 2026.

Businesses may wish to begin internal planning ahead of 2029, including reviewing invoicing systems for structured invoice capabilities, assessing interoperability with ERP or accounting platforms. Early preparation will help organisations minimise implementation risk, avoid last-minute compliance challenges and unlock the wider operational benefits of digital invoicing.

At Millennium Consulting, we're already helping organisations prepare for this change, including delivering digital invoicing for a global Insurance business, multi-national Logistics company, and a plethora of European high street Retail businesses. Our experience enables finance teams to implement compliant, scalable solutions that improve efficiency while reducing manual processing and administrative overhead.
